They are scum trying to take in unsuspecting folks, taking advantage of lack of technical knowledge to steal and cheat.

Oh they never went away.

Be on the look-out from someone claiming to be from Microsoft or a representative of Microsoft with the phone number 855-888-5881 [called ID]. They are reported to be from a company called Ceylon Technologies. They actually have a web site. I searched for that number and got many people complaining about them. One site had people complaining and then one or two people [different names but could be the same one] defending them saying they did a great job. Uh huh.

The way they work is that they call up [usually on behalf of Microsoft or from Microsoft] claimimg that there is a problem with your computer. They usually give some excuse like your computer is sending out malware, part of a botnet or something and then request to access your computer remotely. From there they botch up something in your computer or maybe filter the event viewer just to show all the red flags. Then they say they will have to charge you some amount.

So, is an "out-of-the-blue caller" someone pretending to be a Microsoft employee (blue badge)?
Microsoft DOES NOT call customers to offer support. They have billions of customers and can not afford to call each one. Instead, if there is an issue, they WILL FIX their software and let people know.

I've been asked for these steps many times without the need to pause the video.

1.Run DISKPART with admin rights
2.Type in LIST DISK to list off all disks attached to your system. Make note of your disk# representing your USB stick or else you could wipe a disk that is not the right one!!!
3.Type SELECT DISK # where # represents YOUR USB STICK
4.Type CLEAN to erase everything / every partition on the disk. !! Warning!!! Remember you validated what disk to clean in step 2, right?
5.Type CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY to make your new primary partition
6.Type ACTIVE to mark partition as active
7.Type FORMAT FS=NTFS QUICK to perform a quick format
8.Type EXIT to close diskpart – unless you want to make more bootable USB disks

then follow with the copy as described in the video.

that's it!

I did find the mouse had a bit of a learning curve, but now I prefer it to my touchscreen. When I get a tablet I might feel differently about it…

Nice article.. I loved win 8.. However, I would like to mention couple of issues that I faced 1) Wireless connectivity issues 2) It is too much inclined toward touch screens, use of mouse is kinda irritating
